The eight kootas

Varna (1) compares spiritual temperament. Vashya (2) is mutual attraction and influence. Tara (3) counts from one birth star to the other for fortune and wellbeing. Yoni (4) pairs the animal symbols of the stars for physical compatibility.

Graha Maitri (5) checks whether the lords of the two Moon signs are friends, the basis of understanding. Gana (6) compares Deva, Manushya and Rakshasa natures. Bhakoot (7) looks at the distance between the Moon signs for family welfare, and Nadi (8), the heaviest, is linked to health and children.

Reading the total

Below 18 is traditionally not recommended, 18 to 24 acceptable, 25 to 32 very good and 33 to 36 excellent. Because Nadi and Bhakoot carry 15 points between them, a zero in either is treated as a dosha in its own right.

Questions families ask

Which koota is the most important?

Nadi, worth 8 points, followed by Bhakoot (7) and Gana (6). A zero in Nadi or Bhakoot is called a dosha.

Can a match with less than 18 gunas work?

Many families will still go ahead when doshas are cancelled or other factors are strong, and many happy marriages have low scores. The score is one traditional input, not a verdict.

Why does my score differ between websites?

Calculators use slightly different tables for Yoni, Vashya and Gana. Ours match AstroSage, which most families compare against.
