Purnima dates 2026

Purnima (Pournami in Tamil and Malayalam, Poornima) is the full-moon tithi, the 15th of the bright half, when the Moon is 168° to 180° ahead of the Sun. Many vrats and festivals fall on it, and each month’s Purnima carries that month’s name.

Which day is it observed?

A tithi rarely matches a calendar day: it can begin at any hour and lasts about 19 to 26 hours. Most traditions observe it on the day it prevails at sunrise, though some vrats are kept on the day the full moon is present at moonrise or in the evening. Times above are in India Standard Time; for your own town’s sunrise and the tithi at sunrise, see today’s panchang.

Month names follow the amanta calendar (new moon to new moon) used in South and West India. In the North Indian purnimanta calendar the dark half belongs to the following month, so the same day can carry the next month’s name.
