How your nakshatra is found

The zodiac is divided into 27 nakshatras of 13°20′ each, from Ashwini to Revati, and each nakshatra into four padas of 3°20′. Your janma nakshatra is the one the Moon occupied at your birth. It names you in many families, sets your dasha periods and is the basis of marriage matching.

The Moon moves through a nakshatra in about a day. If you do not know your birth time, we place the Moon at midday and tell you if it changed stars that day.

Questions families ask

Is nakshatra the same as birth star?

Yes. Nakshatra, janma nakshatra, birth star, natchathiram and nakshathram all mean the Moon’s star at birth.

Why is my nakshatra different on another site?

Usually because of the birth time or time zone, or a different ayanamsa. We use Lahiri, the Indian government standard.
